Garden Transformation — Alton
Project Type
Photography
Date
April 2023
This project was for a local couple who were downsizing from a long-loved country home into a new build in the heart of Alton. Like many new houses, the garden they were left with was functional but flat a concrete slab and a patch of tired turf, with very little sense of place.
The brief was to create a garden with depth, colour and texture somewhere that felt considered and settled, rather than newly imposed. Inspiration came from two very different places: the calm structure and restraint of a Japanese garden seen at Chelsea, and the softness and familiarity of the cottage garden they had just left behind.
The design focused on layering. Hard landscaping was used to create clear routes, thresholds and moments of pause, while planting brought movement, seasonal change and a sense of quiet abundance. Stone, brick and timber were carefully combined to add texture and weight, helping the garden feel grounded and established from the outset.
Rather than trying to recreate what they’d lost, the aim was to build something new that still felt personal a garden that rewards looking, slows you down, and grows richer with time. The result is a space that feels calm but never sparse, structured but not rigid a genuine retreat at the heart of a busy town, and a garden designed to be lived with, not just looked at.
