Timber Frame Addition — Thatched Cottage, Cobham

Project Type

Extension

Date

January 2019

This project involved adding a new timber frame extension to a traditional thatched cottage. The challenge was never about size, but about balance introducing light, usable space without disturbing the character or calm of the original building.

The approach was deliberately measured. The new structure was designed to sit comfortably alongside the existing cottage, using a clear timber frame language that feels honest and legible, while remaining respectful of its traditional neighbour. Rather than copying historic details, the extension reads as contemporary but sympathetic confident enough to be new, quiet enough not to dominate.

Careful attention was paid to proportions, rooflines and junctions, ensuring the addition feels settled within the wider composition of the house. Large openings bring in light and views, creating a sense of openness and connection to the garden, while the internal spaces remain warm, calm and grounded very much in keeping with the feel of an English cottage.

The result is an extension that adds genuine day-to-day usability. It gives the house room to breathe, improves flow and light, and creates spaces that are easy to live in all without losing the intimacy and charm that made the original cottage special.
