Boathouse Conversion Annex, Wraysbury on Thames
Project Type
Conversion
Date
May 2020
This project involved converting an existing boathouse into a self-contained annex on the Thames at Wraysbury. The brief was clear from the outset a fast turnaround and a space that would give their son independence as he finished university, without it feeling temporary or compromised.
Although time was tight, the approach stayed the same. The building already had a simple, purposeful structure, and the work focused on making it comfortable, calm and easy to live in, rather than overworking it. Layout decisions were made to keep movement clear and natural, allowing the space to feel settled despite its modest footprint.
Materials were chosen for durability and warmth, with timber used to soften the interior and bring a sense of character to what could otherwise have felt like a purely practical conversion. Storage, kitchen and sleeping areas were carefully integrated so the annex works as a complete living space rather than a scaled-down add-on.
The result is a straightforward, well-balanced building that does exactly what it needs to do. It offers independence without isolation, comfort without excess, and a sense of place that feels permanent rather than provisional a small building, made properly.
