Oak Framed Garden Room — New Forest National Park
This oak framed addition was all about restraint, proportion and letting the materials do the talking. Set within the New Forest National Park, the brief was to create a space that felt rooted in its surroundings rather than imposed on them something that would sit comfortably alongside the existing house and age gracefully over time.
I worked with green oak, glass and light as the primary elements. Every joint, brace and beam was carefully considered, not just structurally but visually, the frame is meant to be read, understood and enjoyed. The detailing is honest and precise, allowing the natural character of the oak to lead, from the grain and checking to the way the light moves across it throughout the day.
Large areas of glazing were used to dissolve the boundary between inside and out, pulling the garden deep into the space and changing the feel of the room with the seasons. Rooflantern and full-height glazing bring a softness to the light, creating a calm, generous atmosphere that feels connected to the landscape beyond.
This was a project about slowing things down, using real materials properly, and building something that feels as though it has always belonged there not a statement, but a quiet, confident addition to the home.
