Garden Studio — Cedar, Light and Angles

This garden studio grew out of its setting rather than being dropped into it. Tucked into a dense, well-established garden, the challenge was to create something that felt both intentional and slightly unexpected a small building with its own character, but one that still sat comfortably among the planting.

Cedar shingles were used to soften the form and allow the building to weather naturally over time. The texture and tone of the timber changes with the light and seasons, helping the studio settle gently into its surroundings rather than standing apart from them. The detailing is simple but deliberate, with careful junctions and clean lines that let the material speak for itself.

Inside, light was the driving force. Carefully placed glazing draws the garden in, framing views of greenery and pulling daylight deep into the space. The angles aren’t quite orthodox and that’s very much the point and scope from our artistic client. Subtle shifts in roof pitch and wall lines create moments of interest, breaking away from the standard “box in the garden” and giving the studio a sense of movement and personality.

This is a space designed to be used and enjoyed somewhere calm but uplifting, shaped by real materials, natural light and a willingness to let the building have its own quiet individuality.
